HBC Part 3 Final testingâ€bringing the business to market

Written by Yvonne Kloiber, Global Ambassador and Dual Degree Student. Hult Boston Class of 2017. Recap Following and wrapping up from HBC Part 2: Developing your business idea, the last step of our Hult Business Challenge journey was undoubtedly the most intense, even though very exciting. â€Å"Raino† our business idea was born and the challenge we faced was to present it in a convincing way. During our time at Hult, we had the change to attend many workshops, related on only to HBC, but also to Hult Prize and pitching yourself. The key takeaway for me from these sessions was: It is inevitable to present YOURSELF in the best way possible. You might wonder why I believe this is the key. The answer is simple: Even though you are actually presenting a business idea, investors won’t invest unless they believe in YOU! Thinking back to part 1 of my blog and the beginning of our journey, this was very visible we had a strong team and the idea changed many times. Team Raino To create the best possible pitch for Raino we decided to create a trailer which shows our audience (classmates and judges) how uncomfortable rain is and how it can influence your life in a negative way. Shooting this video was definitely one of my personal highlights. We shot part of it on campus during an actually sunny day. Because of that one, my teammates sacrificed himself to get wet for the purpose of the video. Also, we sprayed Raino in the restroom on our pants to demonstrate how it could potentially work – having an invisible water-repellent layer on regular clothes. Putting this all together, our presentation started with the video as an introduction and continued outlining business values and detailed sales model. The distribution strategy that we created was based on vending machines located strategically in subway stations in and around Boston. The preliminary rounds came faster than ever expected. Our team was able to convince classmates and coaches and finally made it to the final pitch competition only one day later! This was the first big step for us and we achieved our defined goal from the beginning – pitching in the final! The final pitch The following day, we had the pleasure to present in front of all cohorts to a packed â€Å"Fenway Bleachers† (largest room on Campus). The excitement, as well as a little bit of nervousness, were in the air. Even though the final pitch didn’t go as smooth as the day before we got very good feedback for our project and I am able to look back to a very successful project! We were originally planning to launch our product, however, due to the fact that we are still studying a potential lunch date and testing on a larger scale is not defined. However, after creating a prototype as well as a great business pitch our project was basically ready to go to market. Winning Team of the HBC Entrepreneurship track was Trabu! An application that offers a service that can be compared to blabla car in Europe, which is basically Uber for long distances (e.g. Boston New York). Looking back, I feel that the HBC challenge, especially the entrepreneurship track for people interested in founding their own business, is a unique opportunity. Never in life, will you have such a protected and well-guided environment as during these last 5 months. Especially if you are more risk averse when it comes down to starting a business this is your chance to learn! I never thought that entrepreneurship would be my thing at all, but after this challenge, I could absolutely imagine starting my own business at some point in the future. The Impact of Information and Communication Technology on Mathematics Free Essay Example, 2250 words

Social constructivism is having a powerful effect on the "aims, content, teaching approaches, implicit values, and assessment of the mathematics curriculum, and above all else, the beliefs and practices of the mathematics teacher" (Ernest, 1992). It also facilitates the sharing of ideas among students as they work in collaboration. This aspect is discussed in detail in the Mathematics Matters report published by the National Centre for Excellence in the Teaching of Mathematics after consulting over 150 Maths teachers from all over the UK (NCETM, 2008). For real learning to take place, ultimately it is essential that the student constructs his or her own framework for understanding and applying Mathematics. Nothing is more pleasurable for a teacher of Mathematics than when seeing their students truly fascinated by the subject; when they grasp concepts and solve problems for the first time when they discover more elegant solutions by themselves, notice underlying connections and rela tionships, and so on. Some of these points are also mentioned under the Importance of Mathematics at key stage 4 (QCDA, 2010b). Considering the scope for using ICT in the teaching of Mathematics, we shall focus exclusively on computers. Supply and Demand Framework System †Free Samples to Students

Question: Discuss about the Supply and Demand Framework System. Answer: Introduction: Azevedo and Leshno have clearly stated that lower price does always imply greater demand. This is simply because as and when a good is sold at a cheap and affordable rate, the consumers are able to get more value for their money, resulting in consumer surplus. The authors rightly state that this may not hold truth for substitute goods. For example, even if a box of Coffee is charged low, if the price of Tea is still lower, people would prefer to buy the substitute goods only. However, they also refer to the Demand Curve which clearly demonstrates an inverse relation between the price of a commodity and the demand of the same. One major strength of the article is that the authors have explained the inverse relation between demand and price of a commodity with the help of economic theories, especially the theory of Demand Curve that helps in explaining the scenario in a more effective way. The authors also refer to various cases, where the demand for a product has been found to increase with the reduction of price. This adds to the credibility of the research. However, the weakness of the article is that it does not consider the case of Veblen goods and Giffen goods which are exceptions to this concept. Forstall offers a counter-perspective to the well-known theory of economics regarding the relation between price and demand of a good. Forstall refers to the Apple products and shows how even if the price goes up, consumers will buy the product. Similarly, he also explains that if the price goes down, it may decrease demand of the goods. The reason behind this is the Apple products are regarded more as status symbols rather than necessary products. Hence, Forstall claims people will tend to consume them only if these are priced higher than the rival products. Consequently, a fall in the price will not prove how rich and tasteful these consumers are, and hence with the fall in price, consumer demand will not necessarily increase. A major strength of the article lies in the way it offers a counter-perspective to the established economic theory of price and demand. The article challenges the traditional theory, but it could draw on more examples, as it only refers to the Apple products, and thus the argument becomes weak. The article however is a bit biased in style, as it does not consider the exception. When the price increases, the middle income buyers will demand more of the expensive product even though the higher class may not demand it as before. Saintvilus in this newspaper claims that even if the price of an I Phone will increase, he will not still think of stopping to consume the product. He states that I Phone has become more of an obsession for many, and considering the social status associated with it, people will not buy it at a low price. The newspaper argues that the price reduction will not essentially imply demand increase, and this is especially true in case of luxury and status commodities. The newspaper article lacks critical depth and theoretical framework that is the only weakness of the article. Otherwise, the article is well-structured. Singh, J., 2017.Price Demand Relationship: Normal, Inferior and Giffen Goods. [online] Economics Discussion. Available at: https://www.economicsdiscussion.net/cardinal-utility-analysis/price-demand-relationship-normal-inferior-and-giffen-goods/1069 [Accessed 18 Aug. 2017]. The author argues that in case of an Inferior good, the reduction in price will not always lead to the increase in demand. There are inferior goods which according to Singh are known to be consumed by people of lower social status. As a result, the demand increase on price reduction of these products will entirely demand on the income of the consumer. In case the consumer income increases, he will not think of buying the inferior good even if the good is charged at a low price. The argument is wells-structured and offers a comprehensive insight into the different types of goods, such as inferior goods and giffen goods. The author thoroughly discusses nad explains why the theory of demand curve does not hold truth in all situations. The content is unique as it explains the importance of income effect in determining the relation between consumer demand and price reduction of a commodity. However, while explaining the inferior goods, the author refers to possible exceptions of this situation, and yet has not explained the exceptions well. In the article, the author argues how even if price does not influence quantity demanded, quantity demanded will be more likely to influence price. Referring to the Arabica of coffee beans of USA the author rightly claims how the product being unique has a higher demand, that in turn will result in higher price. In other words, the price will not be low and yet the consumers will be responsible for the same. The article offers a unique perspective and shows how often the price does not determine the quantity demanded, rather the situation can turn out the other way round. This content is unique as it deconstructs the economic theory of demand curve and shows quantity demanded has a greater impact on price. Bibliography: Azevedo, E.M. and Leshno, J.D., 2016. The Swimmer By John Cheever Essays - The Swimmer, Guggenheim Fellows

The Swimmer by John Cheever John Cheever's story ?The Swimmer? depicts a protaganist, and the society that has nurtured him, as lacking in seriousness and responsibility. Neddy, the bewildered protagonist, represents a society satirized for centering its values on social status and materialism. During the course of Neddy's journey, the illusions he has constructed about his life are stripped away, and in the process the truth behind his society is realized. In unveiling the tragedy of Neddy's existence, Cheever reveals the unworthiness of an unexamined life. The tragedy of Neddy's presence leads to his own demise. Through an unique usage of tone, Cheever foreshadows the misfortunes of the protagonist. Stereotypically, the author hints at the fact that that wealthy people loaf around and indulge themselves with alcohol to rid themselves of their problems (368). In a mocking manner, almost setting Neddy up for his failure, the day begins beautiful and everyone is happy, but a feeling of confusion soon follows (368). Significantly, by exemplifying the point of view, Cheever allows the reader to see Neddy from two different perspectives. According to Neddy, ?his life was not confining and the delight he took in observation could not be explained by its suggestion of escape? (368). The bystanders view of Neddy, however, depicts him as ?close to naked,? as they ?wondered if he was the victim of foul play, had his car broken down, or was he merely a fool? (371). This is the only moment in the entire story where a perspective other than Neddy's is offered, indicating that Cheever wants to maintain an emphasis on the bewilderment of Neddy. In addition, elements of symbolism throughout the story exhibit the troubles of Neddy. The water, a symbol of the unconscious, represents the thoughts and actions of Neddy. Alcohol, a means of escape, lies as a threat to Neddy's existence because he feels that ?whiskey would... carry him through the last of his journey? (373-74). The storm represents a change from the confusion of Neddy into the truth about his existence. The worthlessness of Neddy's unexamined life ultimately forces him awy from reality. Initially, the characterization of Neddy and the society which he represents reveals the meaninglessness of both his life and that of the society. ?My misfortunes? ....I don't know what you mean,?(373) Neddy obliviously responds when receiving sympathy for his financial misfortunes that he seems totally unaware of. Due to the snobbish behavior accustomed to Neddy through his society, he is afraid that the public pool will ?damage his own prosperousness and charm?(372) which he no longer possesses anyway. Furthermore, the constant usage of allusion remains evident throughout the story. Almost Fitzgerald-like in his descriptions of the ?prosperous men and women,?(370) Cheever satirizes the society. Also similar to the works of Fitzgerald, the protagonists' own wealth and power force his social decline. Importantly, symbolism also plays a role in describing the lifestyle of Neddy and the society of whic h he represents. The storm adds to Cheever's satirical story in that confusion is even moreso emphasized(370). The parties and constant drinking of the wealthy society acts as a way for them to escape everyday responsibilities (368). Cheever illustrates the meaningless life of Neddy and his satirized society by uncovering the affliction of Neddy's existence. The fact that Neddy feels that he still holds the same social stature as he previously did, exhibits his ignorance and inability to accept his own misfortunes. Throughout the story, both the society and Neddy think that they can avoid the problems of life by consuming alcohol, obtaining wealth, and partying. Ultimately, the personal tragedy of mankind results from his own ignorance and misperception of reality.

Creating a Sustainable Environment Essay Example for Free

Creating a Sustainable Environment Essay The terms Sustainable and Sustainability are used to describe many different approaches toward improving our way of life. Sustainability is a way to develop the environment without harming it, creating a system that keeps its self-feasible for future needs. Thus, sustainability means taking the long-term view of how our actions affect future generations and making sure we do not deplete resources or cause pollution at rates faster than the earth is able to renew them. Hence, if sustainability is enforced and took in action it will create a world where everyone can have fulfilling lives and enjoy a rich level of well-being within the limits of what nature can provide. Nowadays, there are many lifestyle trends that are rapidly damaging the environment and which are not sustainable. The main three lifestyle trends I am focusing on are; Children’s toys, entertainment focusing on cinema and pubs/clubs and office work environment. These lifestyle trends have a lot of unsustainable factors that can be changed and improved till year 2020. It is important that from a young age children will be taught the values of sustainability because they will inherit the world that we create today. Therefore, the stuff given to them should not damage the environment. Today there is the possibility to make sure that children’s playthings are green and healthy. Finding sustainable and less toxic toys for children is important since it can do well both for children and the environment. When buying toys it is important to look for PVC-free toys (polyvinyl chloride). PVC releases toxins into the environment all the way through its lifecycle from manufacturing to disposal. Many PVC toys also contain, chemical compounds that make the PVC plastic more flexible, which can lead to both cancer and hormonal disruption. Therefore, when choosing PVC-Free toys one will not only be sustainable but will prevent children from hazardous toxins. A better and safer alternative is to choose toys made from wood since, they are more sustainable and most importantly will last generations longer than the cheap plastic stuff. Batteries have become second nature in most toys today. Not only this is harmful for the environment due to massive battery consumption but also easily children can chew batteries which are toxic. Hence, one can easily replace these battery-powered toys by simpler toys which still are of an entertainment and fun. Furthermore, these would be cheaper and sustainable. However, for the older children that have more sense and always look for original and new toys which have the latest electronics, one should opt to look into rechargeable batteries to eliminate waste. Sometimes the most rewarding toy might not be a toy at all it might be the act of planting a tree, play catch or hide and seek. Getting children outside provides them with abundant opportunities to run around, have fun, get exercise, and learn about th e urban and natural environments around them. Outdoors needs to get revived again and children should be given the opportunity to play and enjoy more outdoors activities. Another way of being sustainable is by buying Second-hand toys because it does not mean that when a toy has been used once it would not be just as much fun the second time around. Thus, this will decrease the waist of toys which sometimes are hardly used or damaged, also these would be cheaper and one will be more sustainable. Additionally, for children sometimes is not whats in the box but it is the box! Sometimes it is the stuff that one already has that can prove the most fun to imaginative children. Therefore before throwing the box from that new toy away, think of it as a potential arts and crafts project instead. These factors are really important and not such difficult to practice and understand. These simple adjustments are both beneficial for children and the environment itself. Moreover, the children will be grown up in well sustainable grounding and mentality. Entertainment consists of any activity which provides a diversion or permits people to amuse themselves in their l eisure time. Entertainment may also provide fun, enjoyment and laughter. However, it is still important to be aware of a more sustainable entertainment environment. Thus, the challenge is to create good entertainment that sustains an audience and it is sustainable. Looking at the cinema industry there are so many things that go to waste that can be easily used more than once. Starting from when one arrives at the cinema each person that pays gets a ticket, why not making it a stamp on our hand to prove that we have paid therefore, this will eliminate the use of all those paper usage every day. Furthermore, when buying snacks a lot of packaging material is used, normally it would consist of paper and plastic which are all thrown away after usage since, most of them are not good to be recycled due to certain chemicals that are present. What a waste! So let’s entre a new cinema trend instead of a paper bucket or cups let’s replace them with plastic bowl and cups, which remains in the cinema to be reused. Why Plastic? Plastic is more safe, to prevent broken glass on the floor and since people themselves has to walk with them it will prevent certain accidents. This will be more sustainable due to less of waste and even less expenses since one will diminish the cost of buying so much packaging every year. Looking and the pubs/clubs sector one has no idea how unsustainable they are. From my own experience I work in this industry and therefore know a lot of what goes on. From the bar itself the amount of plastic thrown away every night is crazy. Why this? For safety purposes drinks are given in plastic cups to prevent having a lot of injuries during fights. However, these cups are not reused or recycled thus a plastic cup is only used for a couple of minutes and then thrown away. Therefore, replacing them with solid plastic cups which can be washed during the night and reused again is a better option which is more sustainable, more environmentally friendly and cheaper on the long run. Moreover, a lot of empty plastic bottles of soft drinks and glass bottles of alcohol and beers are thrown away in the same bin without recycling them, which is a pity because one only needs two separate bins to do so. Additionally a lot of paper made tickets are given when paying beforehand for parties. Yes, giving a ticket is the best way to prevent hassle and chaos when entering the club however, the size of the ticket sometimes is too much! Since, sometimes one can actually make three tickets from the size of the normal ticket that is normally given nowadays. If minimizing the size of the tickets one will decrease the amount of paper usage every night. Moreover, a lot of fliers are used to market other parties, fair enough marketing is important however, printing thousands of fliers and not even using half of them is a waist. Today, one can market their party through facebook, internet and even automatic mobile messages, this will decrease the amount of fliers printed which is more sustainable. What about noise pollution? The sound at the clubs is set at a very high volume that one cannot even talk to someone else because it will be impossible to understand one another. Noise pollution has an effect on our health, the extra sound can damage physiological and psychological health. Noise pollution can cause annoyance and aggression, hypertension, high stress levels, hearing loss, sleep disturbances, and other harmful effects. Then there are certain factors that can be adopted in both sectors, both in the cinema industry and the club/pubs environment. For example focusing on the bathrooms, automatic sensors can be fixed to switch on the light when entering and then switch off when no one is present. Even automatic water turn off devices can be installed to prevent water loss. Additionally, electric hand dryers with automatic turn-off system are good to prevent the use of disposable paper towels. Furthermore, it is good to use water pressure system to save water and energy by adding a water saving device for water taps in wash hands basins to decrease the consumption of water usage. These all are changes which can make a better sustainable environment. Increasing awareness on the work place about sustainable principles can encourage workers to implement sustainability principles into their own personal practices and beyond. There are also sustainable factors that can be adopted till 2020 in an office work environment. Such as using electronic mail to send memos, or route memos to staff members rather than making a paper copy for each person. One can use reused envelops for internal mail. Moreover, is better to do direct deposit instead of making a paycheque every time. Furthermore, it is essential to have a photo copier that makes double sided copies to minimize the amount of paper used every day. Also, cleaning shell be done within office hours rather than at other times which this would require lighting and air conditioning to remain on. It is also vital to encourage employees to bring their own washable mugs to work rather to use disposable cups. Also having a thermos for beverages is a good practice to decrease the use of energy daily. Additionally, it is better to use reusable containers rather than cover launches in plastic or disposable paper bags. It is also good to use a reusable cloth then disposable tissue every time one needs to wipe his/her hands. This will result to a better sustainable environment and less expenses since, an object is used consequently rather used once and then thrown away. These mentioned above are all practices that can be adopted in the future which can make the world more sustainable. If from now people will change their mentality and get more informed how to become more sustainable in 2020 people will be able to live a healthier life, a life where less money is spent, a life which helps build stronger relationship between them and their neighbours, and a life which helps protect, conserve or improve the natural environment. Children are the future, so teaching them sustainability is essential to the well-being of the planet. As a Home Economics and Textile studies teacher it is important to teach students that everything on this earth is related and demonstrated by their behaviours and actions that affect the environment. By teaching students the importance of sustainability, they will be empowered and be more convinced that even they are capable of making a difference. Moreover, in order to make students aware of the importance of sustainability, as a teacher I have to make them aware of the consequences of their actions and decisions taken know and the affect it would have in the future on the environment. Furthermore, it is important to teach students how their daily decisions can affect their ecological footprint so that they make more conscious decisions to boost the sustainability of their lifestyle. Home Economics gives the opportunity to the teacher to entre deeply in the topic (sustainability) therefore it gives us the opportunity to teach and show students the importance of sustainability and build more awareness and knowledge on the meaning and the term sustainability. Furthermore, as a teacher I can show students that being sustainable is not something that require a lot of work but only require some thought. Additionally, show students that we can be sustainable in everything that we do in our life, example trough textile studies I can encourage students to use recycled fabric and teach them how to sew simple things example; repair a zip, make patches to holes, these will prevent from throwing clothes away when little adjustments is required. Therefore it is essential that awareness and education will increase to enhance sustainability. Moreover, encouraging and stimulating good practice in the use and management of natural resources, in particular their minimal use and maximum reuse by recycling in an environmentally sustainable manner is a vital issue. Hence, Education is an essential tool for achieving sustainability.

The Unconstitutionality of Capital Punishment Essay -- Argumentative P

The Unconstitutionality of Capital Punishment Capital punishment is one of the most popularly debated topics in the nation today. Since colonial times, more than 13,000 people have been legally executed. A large percentage of these executions occurred during the early 1900's. In the 1930's, as many as 150 people were being legally executed every year. However, the number of executions started to decrease as public outrage became apparent. In 1996, thirty-seven states, including New Jersey, legalized the death penalty. Of the other thirteen states, Michigan abolished the death penalty in 1847, Minnesota in 1853, and Alaska and Hawaii never had the death penalty. Today, there are over 2,000 people on "death row." Almost all are very poor, and a significant number of them are mentally retarded or disabled (ACLU 1). The American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) dictates that, "In all circumstances, the death penalty is unconstitutional under the Eight Amendment, and that its discriminatory application violates the Fourteenth Amendment" (1), and therefore, capital punishment violates the Constitution. Capital punishment should be illegal throughout the nation for many reasons. Capital punishment has many supporters. One of the major arguments that these supporters express is that the death penalty serves as a deterrent to crime. They argue that if the death penalty is legalized and practiced, it will discourage others from committing a crime. However, by comparing the data of the states with the death penalty and the states without the death penalty, one can easily see that the death penalty has no effect in deterring crime. According to the National Research Council in 1976, "the available studies provide no useful evidence on th... ...deterrence, it is incapacitation(Kaminer) C. Human judgment is not infallible 1. The risk of executing the innocent is too high. 2. The death penalty is final-no way to reverse. 3. Death Penalty and Sentencing Information study. D. Unconstitutionality 1. Violates the Eighth Amendment-"prohibition against cruel and unusual punishment(Litardo). 2. Violates the Fourteenth Amendment-"guarantees of equal protection of the laws and due process"(Litardo). E. Discrimination 1. Gender discrimination(Bedau). 2. Racial discrimination(Bedau). 3. Socio-economic level discrimination(Bedau). III. Conclusion A. Capital punishment is not an effective way of approaching the crime problem. 1. Capital punishment has many different difficulties as an attempt to decrease and prevent crime 2. Capital punishment should be illegal throughout the nation.

Intercultural aspect of conflict resolution Essay

During the first day of the workshop, I did not completely understand the real meaning of culture. I did not even have a single definition for the term culture. Many questions came into my mind such as, â€Å"What is culture? What are the factors that create culture? What is the scope of culture? Does culture improve itself or not? Although, I started the inquiry on the concept of culture without certain answers for these questions, I had figured them out step by step during that day. I started to find answers for most of the questions that I faced. I finally understood what culture was and why different people with different cultures had different behaviors. By understanding the factors that influenced culture, I started to learn its importance to the parties who got involved in particular conflicts. Throughout that day, I comprehended why people with different cultures got involved in particular conflicts and what were their objectives. I started to give answers for these queries. They might need someone whom they can air their grievances or opinions with. Moreover, they might only wish that others would respect their culture as it was. In the role play, I learned that listening skill was very helpful in making the parties who were involved in the conflict feel better. Also, they should be given the chance to continue telling their stories without any interruption. I had also learned that I could be able to interact with them simply through body language such as moving my head up and down which tells, â€Å"I understand you. Keep going.† Furthermore, these skills would give me the chance to get as much information as possible and understand the parties’ cultures. Personally, I think that having much understanding of other cultures using the skills mentioned earlier would help me adapt with their behaviors and become more flexible when dealing with them.   Culture’s factors such as religion, climate and geography play very significant roles in parties’ behavior. These explain why different countries have different cultures. Finally, all ideas and skills that I had learned during the first day of the workshop let me pay a close attention on understanding other cultures, respecting their beliefs and values as I want other people do the same thing when they cross my culture. I would try to use these ideas and skills in my daily life – simply by listening to other people and respecting them.

Synthesis Of Isopently Acetate ( Banana Oil ) - 1072 Words

Synthesis of Isopently Acetate (Banana Oil) Deborah Nyabando CHEM 2311 TA: Nicholas Serratore February 20, 2014 Purpose: The purpose of doing this experiment was to prepare isopently acetate, an ester that has a pleasant smell like that of bananas from isopently alcohol and acetic acid by the Fischer esterification reaction. Sulfuric acid was used as a catalyst. Water, sodium bicarbonate, and sodium chloride were used to extract any impurities from the product. Simple distillation was then used to purify the ester product farther. Reaction Scheme: Mechanism: Procedure 8.5 mL of acetic acid and 5.0 g (6.2 mL) of isopently alcohol were measured out and added into a 50-mL round bottomed flask. A few boiling stones were added to the flask and then 1.2 mL of concentrated sulfuric acid was added to the mixture under the fume hood. The reflux apparatus was set up- a condenser mounted vertically onto the reaction flask and two hoses attached to it. The water was to flow into the condenser through the bottom inlet and out throught the top outlet. A heating mantle was placed under the reaction flusk and the mixture was let to heat to boiling and reflux for sixty minutes. After the reflux period, the reaction flask was let to cool down and its contents were then transferred to a separatory funnel. 10 mL of water was added to the mixture, funnel was closed with a stopper and carefully shook while venting to wash out the mixture. The equous (lower) layer was drained off,
